25th Algiers Bonfire & Concert
December 8, 2012 - 5:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M.
Algiers Gift to the CommunityBonfires up and down Louisiana levees have long been a Cajun tradition designed to guide Santa Claus as he delivered his goodies to children on Christmas Eve. This European tradition was originally brought by the French to Louisiana at the end of the 19th Century. Some 30 years ago, The City of New Orleans adopted the tradition as well, locating the Bonfire beside the Algiers ferry terminal and using the event to kick the Christmas Season into high gear.
Then, in December 2005, the Algiers Bonfire fell victim to Hurricane Katrina. With much of the city still in ruins, starting a big fire on was the last thing on city administrators' minds. In 2010, the merchants of Algiers Point created an "Illumination Celebration" place-holder with candles along the river until the resources could be put in place to ressurect the community's beloved Bonfire. The following year, The Algiers Economic Development Foundation picked up the torch and produced the event to record crowds. This year, The Ferry Foundation joins AEDF in continuing the beloved tradition. Long live SANTA and long live the Algiers Bonfire & Concert! Emceed by WDSU News Anchor Norman Robinson, Councilwoman-at-large Jackie Brechtel Clarkson and Fay Faron, New Orleans very own "Ferry Godmother," this year's event features the music of John Autin, "The New Orleans Piano Man," Marine Band New Orleans, and the JMB Brass Band. For the kids, there is WDSU Weatherwoman, Margaret Orr's reading of "The Cajun Night Before Christmas." There will be vendors for every palate, and soft drinks, beer and wine for purchase. But the "star of the show" is of course, the Bonfire. And yet, the 25th Algiers Bonfire & Concert is just the icing on the cake. Preceding the event will be the day-long events of the Algiers Point Home Tour and Holidays on the Point, making it a very "Super Saturday" in Algiers Point. Take the ferry and make a day of it! Thanks to: New Orleans Councils-at-large, Jackie Brechtel Clarkson and Stacy Head and Councilwoman District 4, Kristin Palmer for supporting this event with all the resources at their disposal. Thanks to the New Orleans Police Department, the New Orleans Sheriff's Department and the Harbor Police for security and general logistics. Thanks especially to the New Orleans Fire Department for their building and of this 25' tall "birthday cake" with an ear-popping climax you won't see coming. This year, The Ferry Foundation joins The Algiers Economic Development Foundation in presenting the 25th Algiers Bonfire & Concert.
